Mindset Cafe: 2013-02-08

Humanity's oldest known ancestor, mini flying Cthulhus, deadly dragons (with a gruesome picture) and bad news for African forest elephants.

Stories for stories

Imagine if Cthulhu could fly. Turns out we're one step closer to that nightmare scenario with proof of airborne squids. Take a look at the picture which is glaringly absent from the article. I'd hate to see one of those things heading for my face. Dragons are alive, well and attacking humans, as an incident with two people shows. The komodo dragon is not particularly lethal, though it can inflict a lot of damage. The real horror is in the sepsis from its bite as this particularly gruesome picture illustrates. Here's something for fans of the steampunk / stonepunk genre. What looks like a gear has been found in coal formed 300 million years ago. Maybe it's a case of "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." Did Luke Skywalker visit Earth? And finally, imagine someone evil getting hold of funky technology from Area 51...

Reading and writing

No writing again this week. Blast! Saturday, early... me, the back yard and the deep blue dawn.

Mother Nature and other terrifying things

This week, it's elephants. The good news is that the WWF is planning to protect endangered species with drones. The bad news is that the African forest elephants of Gabon are being wiped out at an alarming rate.

And finally...

..there's been a long and lively debate waged by creationists. Expect more with the revelation of humanity's oldest known ancestor.
